Is a Consolidated 2900 Series Pilot-Operated Safety Relief Valve Right for Your Application?

The Consolidated 2900 Series pilot-operated safety relief valve provides a cost-effective solution for applications with improperly specified direct spring pressure relief valves. 

The 2900 was specifically developed for high-temperature applications that require the benefits of POSRVs, including a small size and a tight seal. In many situations, a direct spring valve was incorrectly specified, resulting in high inlet losses and damage to the piping system.

Should you upgrade?

Not every application requires a POSRV. In many cases, a direct spring pressure relief valve will work just fine. Here’s an overview of the industries and applications where a POSRV may be indicated:

Design features of the Consolidated 2900 POSRV

If your industry and application fit into the categories above, then upgrading your direct spring operated valve can have myriad benefits, including reduced product loss, decreased fugitive emissions, and less frequent maintenance and repair.

The 2900 combines the technologies used in the Consolidated 1900 Series safety relief valve and the Consolidated 3900 MPV Series POSRV. The base assembly uses the 1900 technology, while the pilot valve uses the 3900 PV and MV technology.

Here are some features of the 2900 that make it the best solution available:

  • New technology is used for the dome flange and dome piston.
  • Metal seats in the main valve allow for a wider temperature range (can accommodate temperatures from -350°F to 1200°F).
  • Heat exchangers sub-cool high-temperature media going through the pilot and into the dome chamber.
  • An extended cover plate maximizes heat dissipation.
  • The center-to-face dimensions are compatible with any API 526 valve.
  • It’s 15% smaller than the average direct spring valve.
  • The valve is unaffected by variable back pressure, so a bellows is not typically required.
  • The disc holder and piston are not coupled, so when back pressure exceeds inlet pressure, the piston moves up while the back pressure holds the disc against the seat. When the set pressure is reached (i.e., back pressure is lower than inlet pressure), the piston will again bear on the disc, and the disc holder and piston will travel upward together as media is relieved.

For applications already using a Consolidated 1900 Series safety relief valve, the upgrade can be provided as a retrofit. For applications with a competitor’s spring-loaded valve, the 2900 design will fit into the same API piping envelope.
