Every winter, sub-freezing temperatures blanket much of the United States for months at a time, putting many outdoor service operations on hold.

Until recently, that included pipeline valve maintenance. In the past, it was a challenge to perform this maintenance from the end of October to March due to frozen equipment.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that, thanks to the ingenuity and dedication of the Allied field service team, we now have a pipeline preventative maintenance process designed specifically for the winter.

The challenge of winter pipeline maintenance

The problem will be familiar to anyone who has installed or worked on a pipeline valve outside in the winter. Before you can use a new valve, it needs to be flushed and greased. If the equipment begins to freeze, the task becomes almost impossible.

The same is true with for installed valves that require troubleshooting. Flushing a valve in winter without the equipment freezing up is very difficult. The result is that the winter pipeline service season was roughly 7 months, rather than a full 12.

Having dealt with these problems for years, Allied began experimenting with various methods to minimize the likelihood of a freeze while performing the procedure. By creating a winter-like repair environment, Allied’s team began working to find a way to alleviate the freezing of the auxiliary equipment needed to perform the procedure.

The result was a new two-step process that allows us to perform the same maintenance operations in winter as we can in summer. This new process is now part of Allied’s pipeline service offerings.

The benefits of our new two-step winter maintenance process

Our commitment to providing the best service possible opens a whole new season of pipeline valve maintenance. This results in huge benefits for our customers.

Significantly reducing the time it takes to perform maintenance in winter

This new two-stage process to pump in winter climates can potentially cut the time it takes to perform outdoor pipeline maintenance from a few days to a few hours. Without having to worry about frozen equipment, we can service your valves and get your system back up and running in no time.

Saving money through increased maintenance efficiency

The mobilization costs of getting a technician out to your site can be significant. We work to save you money by ensuring our technicians are certified to work on all valves from all valve manufacturers so that once they get there, they can do all of the necessary work in one go. With our expanded winter maintenance program, we can now provide this benefit year-round.

Preserving land, crops, and the environment

Many pipelines, especially in the Midwest, run through agricultural land like bean fields and corn fields. A technician servicing the pipeline during the spring and summer might have to drive through that land, potentially tearing up fields and destroying crops. With our new process, we can perform that same maintenance during the winter, saving fields and crops. That’s good for everyone, as well as for the environment and the food supply!
